our first responders have been doing a heroic job protecting our city and saving lives and they are still fighting fires and con ukt doing life-saving search and rescue migs and we owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. the storm brought something like 23 serious fires to parts of staten island, brooklyn, queens as well as city island in the bronx. the terrible fire on breezy point is now ununder control, but we believe we lost more than 80 houses. the search and recovery operations there are ongoing. if any of you saw the pictures on television is looked look a forest fire out in the midwest. the winds were just deaf statinstatin devastating and blowing from one building to the next one. we are hoping and praying that there was no loss of life in those fires, but even we can -- even if we can save any lives, many people have lost their homes and they have our full support in the days and weeks ahead. the 76 shelters we opened will remain open today and we will continue to keep shelters open until people displaced by the storm can safely return to their homes or find temporary housing. o

atlantic city is the highest there at 52. so good signs that winds are slowly beginning to drop down. we're in the 40 and 30 range throughout the delmarva, d.c. washington, d.c., by the way, you had a windy late night. you had some gusts up to 60 miles per hour which caught some people by surprise. further to the north in new england, finally the winds are dying off there, too. we shouldn't see too much more damage. the concern i have overnight besides additional winds is the heavy snow through areas of west virginia, pennsylvania, and also through areas of extreme mountainous maryland. chris, it's going to snow another 1 to 2 feet on top of the foot that is already on the ground. people are already stuck in numerous locations because of that heavy snow and downed trees. so just a multifaceted historic storm. the name sandy is almost guaranteed to be retired by the national hurricane center. i'm sure this will be a multibillion dollar storm damage. we probably had close to $1 billion in new york city, alone. >> we're just get

first we're going to start with the aftermath of sandy. the united states pledging quick relief for the millions of victims of the hurricanes. today president obama is scheduling to arrive in atlantic city to survey the damage alongside governor chris christie. this morning the associated press reports the storm killed at least 50 people. there are more than 8.2 million households still without power across 17 states. and many of the outages could last beyond election day. between damage to property and the economy, the total impact expected to reach a staggering $50 billion. the damage is perhaps nowhere worse than the coastline of new jersey where sandy came ashore laying waste to an amusement park and historic boardwalk at seaside heights. as for the airports, jfk, newark, they're expected to resume limited service this morning. the same cannot be said for laguardia. jetblue posted these photos of the runways submerged. more than 18,000 flights have already been canceled as a result of sandy. and police had to take to the air to save vi
